We have seen that there are many companies that can be created from a large and established company. We have something on similar lines to report here regarding Sidewalk Labs. Replica, an urban data-gathering tool which was created by Sidewalk Labs, has now turned into a company. Apart from the news that Replica is now a company, it also raised $11 million in a Series A funding round from investors Innovation Endeavors. We have also been told that Nick Bowden is heading the company.

While Replica is now a new company, it is known that Sidewalk Labs will remain a board member in the company. Also, it is obvious that the investor Innovation Endeavors will remain Replica’s board members too. The Series A funding will be used in order to have new hires beyond its existing 13-person staff, expansion to new cities and investment in its technology says the company.

Talking about Replica, Bowden says that “Answering questions like who uses the street, in which way and why are critical for city planners as they work to make transit and land use more efficient and sustainable, But current resources available to city planners to analyze people’s travel in urban areas are less than satisfactory.”

Bowden adds in a blog post that the company “is not interested in the movement of individuals; we are interested in the collective movement of a particular place. For this reason, we only start with data that has been de-identified. This data is then used to train a travel behaviour model — basically, a set of rules to represent the movement in a particular place.

These movement models are then matched with what is referred to as a “synthetic” population. Synthetic populations are created using samples of census demographic data to create a broad new data set that is statistically representative of the actual population.”
