Playwrights Local Has Announced 2020 Play Lab with Readings of Plays by Mara Lyne and Diana Lueptow

Playwrights Local announces its fifth annual new product development program, Play Lab 2020. This incubator, combining playwrights with directors and playwrights, takes months to develop and review plays. The series of final presentations include production readings of two new works – “This is not Ramona’s mistake” by Mary Lane and “Oblatus” by Diana Lueptow –– along with the Sanzaru workshop by Greg A. Smith.

All performances take place from February 10-16 at Creative Space at Waterloo Arts. The readings “This is not Ramona’s Fault” by Mara Lane and “Oblatus” by Diana Lueptow are free of charge, preliminary reservation is not required. Greg A. Smith Sanzaru masterclass tickets cost $ 8 and can be purchased at The play will be presented on February 10 at 19:00. Directed by Christina McBurney with dramaturgy Les Hunter, this new play follows the 16-year-old Ramona, who is experiencing the effects of loss and its impact on her family, friendship and intimate life. The presentation of Oblatus by Diana Lueptow will take place on February 15 at 15:00. Directed by Caroline Jackson Smith with Lenore’s dramaturgy Inez Brown, this historical drama follows Abbot, intellectual and composer Hildegard of Bingen, as she challenges church leaders in the 12th century in Germany, initiating a battle of will that she refuses to back down. Both staged readings will be trailed by conversations after the show with playwrights.

The play “Sanzaru” by Greg A. Smith takes place only for three performances: February 14 and 15 at 19:30 and February 16 at 15:00. Created with director Eric Andrews as well as the ensemble of actors – Minor Clein, Lauren B. Smith and Casey Venema – this new work developed, based on the collaboration of the theater was developed almost entirely during the Play Lab this year.
